What are Legal Entity Identifiers?

Legal Entity Identifiers are unique alpha-numeric codes frequently (and increasingly) needed by any company wishing to participate in a cross-border financial transaction.

The LEI system is fast becoming a global standard. Any company engaged in cross-border financial transactions in, through or out of the EU and UK must already possess an LEI. Regulators in the US, Canada and Asia-Pacific either already require the use of LEIs or soon will.

A single supranational not-for-profit organisation guarantees the operational integrity of the global LEI system. The codes themselves are issued by local and global LEI operating units. The registered entity’s reference data – name, type, address, local registration authority and registration number, ownership, and so on – are then made publicly available.
